Acropolis and the greek tragedy

Today we left early to walk up to the Parthenon, to the temple of Athena. The old lady was a star but now she is lam boudia!

Sooooooo many tourists, group upon group from the cruise liners. We slowly walked up from the Plaka side visiting all the museums! Imagine the whole Parthenon was painted in gold, blue and red! How impressive! Massive restoration is on the way, the Pentelic marble gleam white in the midday sun and turns into a honey hue at sun set. The Acropolis is where Poseidon stuck the ground with his trident, and where Athena produced an Olive tree. As you know most of the site was pilfered by the British and the German archaeologists, (not to forget all the artifacts in the Vatican!) and the six maiden columns that support the Erechtheion is plaster casts.

My mother was more interested in Catherine from Nebraska's beautiful legs and insisted that I take a photograph. Ma sĂȘ: vir die manne in haar lewe, hier is 'n paar bene wat julle sal laat bewe!

We came down the hill at 2 pm and sat at a street cafe where we were accosted by a Romanian gypsy child playing the accordion. I explained to mom and dad that this is a decoy and made them aware of the other children lurking around. Mom was eager to part with change! Dad said he is going to put a mouse trap in his pants back
pocket to catch the little thieves!

And now for how we also contributed to the current greek tragedy of economic woes...

We took the metro to the ferry terminal in Piraeus port to see the massive ocean liners. I bought my first truly Greek item, a beautiful table runner with the traditional crochet border. On the way back we got onto the metro without a ticket! My father's idea...they are now converted travelers, save where you can! Real back packers, honestly they graduated on day 2. I said if they catch us who is going to pay the fine? Nobody caught us! But as you know I believe that Karma is a bitch and pay back you will!

  1. I like your Dad's idea to deter pickpockets! Let us know if it works! Great to think of you all there, strolling in all these ancient places.
