Plovdiv

Plovdiv is not only the oldest city in Bulgaria, it's the 2nd oldest city in all of Europe. It's more ancient than Rome, Athens or Constantinople and is a contemporary to Mykene and Troy. The ancient Thracian settlement grew into a town during the time of the Trojan war and even today carries many traces of Mykene influence.

Situated on a large, navigable river and on the main diagonal road from central Europe to Asia, the city went through days of glory and days of destruction, but it was never abandoned. In Plovdiv (the old Phillipopolis - die sending reise van Paulus en Petrus en Barnabas) we see a stadium with 30 000 seats. It is the city in Europe with the longest continued city life, on the continent. We saw icons specifically dedicated to Paul's missionary travels.
