The Romania that stole my heart

Onder groot protes van die auntie, we hired a car and drove for 700 kilometers into the north of Romania, to the famous area of Maramûres.

It's Sunday and we could not choose a better day to be out and about. This region famed for their spectacular wooden churches, beautiful maidens and incredible handy work, was our absolute highlight!

En route we gave an old lady a lift, coming from church, and we dropped her in front of her house. She invited us in and we could not believe the beauty inside! Magnificent embroidered bed throws, woven carpets, wall hangings and lace cushions that took our breath away! Mind blowing and totally exquisite is an understatement to this incredible array of art and crafts. The aunties prance around in their floral short skirts and white lace blouses!

Somehow I kept thinking about my brother in spirit, Roelf, and low and behold, we drive past a cross that look exactly like the one I made for his funeral!

Every person has a magnificent handcarved wooden cross on their property, and every property has the most beautiful wooden gate! Even the roof tiles are wood.

We drove up a treacherous mountain pass and down again on the other side, a beautiful landscape, and now we can understand that Prince Charles fell in love with this country. The area is completely wrapped in magic.

It was voting day in Romania and everyone was on the street! We turned around at the Hungarian border and wove our way down the mountain, only to be caught in a torrent of rain. We arrived at the backpackers safe and sound at around 7 pm. A great relief to have the auntie safely returned to the tightest, tiniest and most friendly back packers on the planet.

My dad and I don't fit into the loo! It's a tight squeeze!
Ma sê wat moet rond uitkom kom plat uit!

Pa sê: varkvleis, varkvleis, varkvleis! He is even considering eating chicken, and chicken he regards as a vegetable!!
En ma sê sy verlang na a lekker bord boerekos!

I bought some fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, and huge radishes that look like carrots next to the road! Tomorrow morning we are having a raw breakfast!!!!
